What Boots are made in Canada?

Canada is a land built for boots, mud, rock, snow, vast wilderness, brutally cold winters, it’s hard not to be Canadian and need a great pair of boots. But what boots are made in Canada? While it’s not something we typically think of being made here, Canada has a long and rich tradition of bootmaking.

Canada West Boots

Hailing from Manitoba, Canada, West Boots knows what needs to go into a vital piece of Canadian footwear. Their most popular lines include Workboots, Cowboy boots, and their take on the global favourite the Chelsea boot. In business since 1978, their shoes and boots have stood the test of time in all kinds of Canadian weather. Something about Canada West Boots that’s special is that they use a “Goodyear Welt” on their boots; this allows the sole to be easily replaced. The leather upper portion will last for years, so having a replaceable sole means you don’t need to get a whole new boot when the sole wears down.

Kamik

Founded in Quebec in 1898, Kamik made hardy boots ever since. They focus on making footwear that excels at doing certain things really well. Kamik is best known for its winter boots featuring the signature leather upper and robust rubber lower. In addition to a formidable winter lineup, Kamik has expanded its catalogue to include sandals, rubber boots, and some very cozy looking slippers. All in all, Kamik is a classic Canadian bootmaker that deserves a look.

Anfibio

Based in Montreal, Anfibio has been making boots since 1968. In the 1970’s it was purchased by Italian immigrant, Vincenzo Passarelli, and his family. Since then, Anfibio has married Italian craftsmanship with Canadian manufacturing to create a truly outstanding footwear lineup. Anfibio makes stylish footwear that’s also incredibly functional. They are expertly waterproofed and include modern materials such as shearling wool. This blend of careful construction and impeccable material choice makes for footwear you’ll be wearing for years to come.

Royer

Focusing solely on work boots, Royer is another example of a Canadian bootmaker who makes no compromises when it comes to robust, durable footwear. Royer uses leading vendors to make the most comfortable, durable boots possible, including Primaloft and Vibrams. Since 1934 they have been making their robust boots in Lac-Drolet, Quebec.

Baffin

It would be hard to have a list of Canadian bootmakers without including Baffin. Their iconic winter boots have kept many a foot warm on the coldest day. In November 2008, Baffin was acquired by another Iconic Winter brand - Canada Goose.

When we think of what is made in Canada, we don’t often look down at our feet. But as we’ve learned, bootmaking is alive and well in Canada. Created by Canadian hands, in good working conditions with fair pay, you know that not only will your footwear take you into the most challenging conditions, but that it was made with Candian values. So the next time you go to look for a pair of boots, sandals, or oven rainboots, check for the “made in Canada” tag - you just might be surprised.
